Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young teenager when her father who was employed as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to perform tasks such as waitressing and cleaning. Ruth went to school and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. But she quit school only after two years of school to pursue an acting career. The path she chose was filled with problems. After landing a gig at New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to get opportunities on stage. After a brief stint as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her position. There she earned a living in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She earned a bachelor's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
